What Is The AR Pistol?

What Is The AR Pistol?

The AR pistol is usually an AR-15 that has a shorter barrel for compactness and maneuverability, the pistol also has a different buffer system so that it may never accept a stock. Probably one of the most popular of the AR-15 Variants, the AR pistol also raises a lot of questions due to the shortness of barrel and the recent addition of the sig stabilizing arm brace to the pistol enthusiast market. In this short article we are going to address some of the most frequently asked questions.

  • Do I need any special license to own an AR-15 Pistol? No special license is necessary or special paperwork, any person 21 or older with the ability of owning a firearm is able to purchase an AR pistol.
  • What classifies an AR as a pistol? An AR-15 is classified as a pistol with two things, first the lower receiver that is to be built as a pistol must me logged in and out as a pistol from the dealer directly, second a pistol cannot have a stock nor a buffer tube that is able to ever accept a stock.
  • Can I build my lower I purchased into a pistol? Yes, but there are a few stipulations. The lower you plan to build with must be registered as pistol from the dealer it was received from, if you build a pistol with a lower registered as a rifle you will be constructing a Short barrel Rifle and can be penalized heavily legally (Such as a nice stay at club fed) without proper registration and licensing.
  • What type of accessories can I use with the AR pistol? All accessories are acceptable such as optics, muzzle breaks, lasers, and flashlights. There are only two accessories that are restricted, one being vertical fore grips but angled grips such as the Magpul AFG are perfectly acceptable; and no installation of stocks. Now even though stocks are restricted on a pistol platform stabilizing arm braces are a good option, it allows the user to put their arm through and balance the weight. Never shoulder the arm brace as of recent rulings if you are to do so you are using it as a stock and again will be penalized as if you were in possession of a Short Barrel Rifle.
  • Since my AR pistol is classified as a pistol, can I conceal it? Yes, as long as the user has a current unexpired concealed carry permit. This allows the user to carry or conceal the firearm loaded anywhere that is allowed for example in the car, in a backpack (in places that allow for concealed carry), etc.
